A Brief History of Bartlett Elementary School
Less than a decade after the end of the Civil War, Bartlett School opened its doors to grades 1-12, occupying the lower floor of a two-story building located on the corner of Woodlawn and Sycamore Streets. In 1917, the school relocated to the present-day location of Bartlett High School. In 1960, a separate unit for grades 1-8 was constructed and officially named Bartlett Elementary School, with 16 classrooms and 13 teachers. The year 1974 brought two major changes for Bartlett Elementary: Grade reassignments saw Bartlett Elementary become a K-5 school and the school earned accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The city of Bartlett evolved into a suburban residential community and its population bloomed. The community's greater needs prompted the construction of new facilities. In January 1991, Bartlett Elementary School opened the new facilities on Billy Maher Road. Since that time, enrollment has increased to approximately 1,070 students with 67 faculty members and a support staff of 35. The Bartlett Elementary PTA
Since Bartlett Elementary and Bartlett High were co-located, there was only one parent-driven organization, the Bartlett Home School Association (BHSA). In 1972, the BHSA divided into two separate bodies, one for each school. On October 11, 1977, the BHSA for Bartlett Elementary voted to disban and become a Parent Teachers Association. The new PTA quickly began efforts to assist the school in creating a wonderful learning environment for the children. After two fundraisers ($1,300) added to the treasury, the PTA purchased a sound system and clocks for the classrooms, donated $1,000 to the teachers and collected 23,000 soup labels for A/V equipment. A tea in honor of the teachers was held only two months after the PTA's establishment. But times, they are a-changin'. The PTA's contributions to the school range from new beanbag chairs to computer technology, from walkways to student recognition, from PE equipment to piano keyboards, from Scrabble to Grandparent's Day, and from Kids Kan to Picture Person. We are the only PTA in Shelby County and one of the few in the state that still offers the RIF program. But all that we do would not be possible if it were not for the faculty at Bartlett Elementary. Their continued support of our programs ensure that we are able to meet our goal of improving school life for all students by improving every classroom. We can state with pride "It's about the children," because our priority is directly to the classroom and teacher / student assistance. Because of our parents' and teachers' cooperation and spirit, we can give "everychild.onevoice".
